FOOD FESTIVAL
We are holding a major food festival in Berwick-upon-Tweed  from 12th to 14th September 2008.  This is planned as a “feast of culture heritage and food”.  It will coincide with “open doors” weekend so we are working closely with the Civic Society and English Heritage.
There will be events taking place all over Berwick but the focus will be the Barracks where there will be a Producers’ Market, cookery demonstrations and historical re-enactments.  A marquee outside the Barracks will house a beer festival which will feature Peelwalls cider from Ayton.
There will be a fish market on the Quayside with cookery demonstrations and tastings.  We are  borrowing some exhibits from the Eyemouth fisheries museum.  The festival will start here with a procession of “the last salmon of year” to an opening celebration in Guildhall.  The Guildhall will house an exhibition of the food heritage of Berwick and we may even serve gruel in the Town Gaol.
Food trails will be available to enable visitors to explore the old maltings, granaries, ice houses, fishing shiels, smokehouses etc – and even a historic pub or two.
Palace Green will be home to camp fire cooking  and other activities by the scouts and cubs.
Borders Organic Gardeners will hold their annual produce day in Berwick to coincide with our festival.
The event will come to an end with a bang: the lighting of the beacon and a hog roast on Windmill Bastion on the Elizabethan Ramparts.
As well as involving all the local food producers, we are keen to include schools, community groups  Women’s Institutes, scout groups, and so on right from the planning stage and during the festival itself.  There is already an enthusiastic working party moving these ideas along.
